Darren Nisbett
29th May - 25th June
Echoes for Company is a new portfolio of works from photographer Darren Nisbett. With this collection Darren continues his intrigue into abandoned buildings and derelict spaces this time fusing grafitti backgrounds and photography. The images are printed on aluminium panels which are first painted, sanded and generally messed up and then glued together to build up the image. He has called this Urban Photographic Decoupage because of the "arts and crafts" nature of the process.
"From the start of the image, it feels like much more of a creative process, gone were my past obsession with attention to detail and I now have to let go and let the print create itself. Theres always a sense of the unknown when the panel emerges from the printer and then again when they all fit together".
Darren spent a lot of time growing up in oxfordshire and now lives near Reading
James Chen Wishart
12th June - 9th July
James Chen Wishart has been invited back to The Jam Factory having exhibited last year with the Oxford based Creative Collective. He will be exhibiting a range of works including painting, drawing and photography that documented the time that he spent in Cambodia.
"I am examining role of the artist as traveler and teacher, using observations made in Cambodia between March and early April 2012. The artist is present both physically and emotionally to great experience, in order to share understanding through visual metaphor and literal translation furthermore to give people energy to take back to their lives."
We look forward to James' solo show in our restaurant gallery this summer.
Tessa Lyons
27th June - 23rd July
"Tessa Lyons' Large Scale Landscapes are moving and absorb you into them to the point that you forget there is other work in the room. Tessa’s work doesn’t just stand out because it is beautiful but also because it is so very different from any of the other illustration work at Brighton. Her subject of natural landscapes and her medium of charcoal produce images that are closer to fine art than the rest of the department’s work."
British Council, Back of the Envelope, June 12th 2012
"My work is about the affinity I feel towards mountains. I have been rock climbing since I was eight years old and this has led me to experience some awe-inspiring places. I love being outside in beautiful, vast landscapes because they offer a sense of perspective which may have something to do with the scale of yourself within the surroundings. I work on giant pieces of paper to reflect this sense of perspective in my work."
Jess Levine.
27th June - 23rd July.
The Jam Factory are really looking forward to exhibiting the work of Jess Levine.
"My work stems from various sources which include personal travels, Kentish landscape, current affairs, childhood memories and textile designs.
I don’t like to limit myself to one discipline, instead preferring to use a wide range of materials and to draw on a wide variety of sources. However, I often initially explore ideas using collage, as I find this a useful process in realising more finished pieces of work or in translating ideas using paint.
My work is often open ended in terms of impact. I like the viewer to bring something of themselves to the piece, rather than having meaning imposed by the maker.
In that respect, I like work to be loose and to have a meaning which is beyond intention, that is the piece in a sense answers back to both the viewer and the maker."
